Ireland Pilgrimage Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

USA to Dublin

Depart from U.S. for our overnight flight to Dublin. Dinner and breakfast will be served on board.

Day 2

Dublin to Athlone

We will arrive in Dublin the morning after we depart the U.S. Our priest and spiritual director for the pilgrimage will celebrate Holy Mass at Mt. Argus Church, then we will visit the Museum of St. Charles. Later, we will transfer to Athlone for dinner and overnight.

Day 3

Travel the Shannon River to Clonmacnoise

Breakfast at our hotel in Athlone and then a boat ride on the Shannon River to Clonmacnoise, which is Ireland's most important monastic city founded by St. Ciaran in the 6th century. Padre Carlos will celebrate a private Holy Mass at Clonmacnoise, overlooking the Shannon River. Then on to Ashford Castle and the city of Cong where the movie, "The Quiet Man" with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara was filmed. We will visit the beautiful grounds of Ashford Castle at the shores of Lake Corrib and the city of Cong and a 13th century abbey where the monks lived and prayed. Dinner and overnight in Galway.

Day 4

Galway and Knock Shrine

After breakfast at the hotel in Galway, we will travel to Knock Shrine where on August 21, 1879 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to fifteen men, women, and children. It is a famous pilgrimage site and in 1979 St. Pope John Paul II visited this Holy Site. We will visit the museum and the basilica and Padre Carlos will celebrate Holy Mass while we are there. We will have free time for private prayer, lunch and shopping on our own. Then back to Galway to visit the Cathedral. Tonight you have the evening free to explore Galway and have dinner on your own.

Day 5

Kylemore Abbey and Killarney

Immediately after breakfast, we will travel to Kylemore Abbey which is home to a community of Benedictine Nuns. This former castle was purchased by the Benedictine community in 1920. It is the setting for a Gothic Church and a beautiful Victorian Walled Garden. Padre will celebrate Holy Mass and afterwards you will have an opportunity to linger in the beautiful countryside and lake surroundings, have lunch and attend a history talk of the Abbey.. In the afternoon, we will depart for Killarney where we will have dinner at the hotel and stay overnight.

Day 6

Dingle Peninsula and Killarney

This morning after breakfast, Padre Carlos will celebrate Holy Mass and then we will set off to explore the Dingle Peninsula. We will visit the town of Inch where the movie "Ryan,s Daughter" was filmed, Eagle Mount, the Cliffs of Slea Head, and the Gallarus Oratory, dated from the 9th century, where in Early Christian Ireland the monks came to pray. We will continue on to Kilmakedar Church, built in the 12th century and once part of complex of religious buildings built in Romanesque style. We will return to Killarney for dinner and overnight.

Day 7

Gougane Barra, Rock of Cashel and Tipperary

This morning after breakfast, we will visit Gougane Barra which is home to the 6th century hermitage of St Finbar, who was the founder of the city and Diocese of Cork. Padre Carlos will celebrate Holy Mass in the beautiful chapel, which is surrounded by Gougane Barra Lake.. Then we will travel to the "Rock of Cashel". This set of religious buildings from the 12th century include the Cathedral, the Round Tower, and Cormac Chapel which was the first Irish Romanesque church. These buildings testify to the importance of this site which used to be the seat of the High Kings of Munster. Cashel is reputed to be the site of conversion of the King of Munster by St Patrick in the 5th century. We will go to Tipperary for dinner and overnight.

Day 8

Glendalough

This morning after breakfast, we will travel through the mountains if Wicklow to Glendalough," the valley of two lakes" which was formed by glaciers during the ice age. Padre Carlos will celebrate Holy Mass at St. Kevin's Church. We will spend most of the day visiting this monastic city established in the 6th century by St. Kevin and learn about the many legends associated with St. Kevin, who is often compared with St. Francis of Assisi. You will have time to walk through this beautiful valley to the upper lake where St Kevin prayed. Then we will travel to our hotel in Dublin for dinner and overnight.

Day 9

Dublin

After breakfast at the hotel, Padre Carlos will celebrate Holy Mass and then we will visit the Trinity College Library which contains over 20,000 manuscripts, among which is the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript Gospel book written in Latin containing the four Gospels of the New Testament. It was created by monks in a Columban monastery in the 9th century. It is regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure. You will have the remainder of the day free to explore Dublin. Dinner on your own and overnight in Dublin.

Day 10

Dublin to U.S.

Immediately after breakfast, we will depart for the airport for our return flight to the U.S.
